Aztec Update

Aztec is living in the office and receiving a lot of love.  He is still being treated for feline diabetes which means around the clock testing and two insulin injections a day.  We knew Aztec was a special cat, but we now know he is also a special medical case.  Therefore, we sought further treatment for his feline diabetes from Main Street Veterinary Service with the goal of getting Aztec in remission.  We are very thankful for Dr. Gaskin and Megan Hamilton who have donated their services to help Aztec. Aztec is on a new diet and he is looking and feeling better.

Aztec’s Story

The small cats that come into our lives fill up our hearts in a big way.

Aztec_when_adopted_out_in_2004Several years ago, a TWS supporter passed away and asked us to care and help find homes for her four domestic cats.  We were able to help even though financial support wasn’t provided. Annie was FIV positive and found a wonderful home with a TWS volunteer and lived to be over 18 years old.  Boo resided at The Sanctuary for several years then found his soul mate with a relative of a TWS employee.  And Aztec and Reggie found companionship with a TWS supporter.

The Sanctuary was recently contacted when Aztec and Reggie’s owner passed away unexpectedly. We found out Reggie had passed away earlier in 2011. Aztec was frightened and left all alone in the house. He masterfully hid from officials and was nowhere to be found on three occasions. A close friend insisted he was still in the house and got permission to look for him. Luckily loved ones did not give up and after a thorough search caught Aztec and brought him to TWS.

Aztec_todayAztec was always a shy cat, but now he had lost everything.  At TWS we are offering him all the love he can handle and medical care.  Cedar Pet Clinic Lake Elmo performed an intake exam, full dental with extractions and diagnosed Aztec with diabetes.  He is getting insulin twice a day, meals several times and unlimited hugs and kisses.  Our hopes is that is 8.6 lb. kitty will be back to his 14lbs. in no time.

We are so thankful for everyone else that has provided Aztec with love for so many years.  Many cats are rehomed several times without ever being part of a family.  This is not the case with Aztec.  He was loved in every home he resided in but unfortunately outlived his human caregivers.

We hope that all of you with pets have family and friends that will care for your pets long after you are gone.  If you don’t, please consider putting a rescue group or caregiver in your estate plan to ensure your pets receive the same love and care that you provided them. Learned more about planned giving here.

You can help Aztec, by becoming his sponsor today!
