The Wildcat Sanctuary (TWS) is seeking an experienced veterinary technician with dynamic leadership skills to serve as Hospital Manager.  We are a 501c3 non-profit, big cat rescue nested between the beautiful lakes, fields and forests in Sandstone, Minnesota conveniently located between the Twin Cities and Duluth.  Our mission is to provide a natural sanctuary to over 100 wild cats in need and inspires change to end the captive wildlife crisis.   The Hospital Manager is responsible for establishing and maintaining veterinary standards of care that matches TWS’ mission.  

The primary tasks for the hospital manager would be to ensure hospital operation and medical treatments run smoothly and that proper veterinary care is prioritized and provided based upon urgency.  Provide leadership and direction in the hospital including direct supervision of hospital staff including veterinarians, veterinary technicians, vet assistants and volunteers.  Perform medical treatments and procedures, under the direction of the veterinarian, when veterinarian in not on site.  This position is full time and reports to the Executive Director.

Compensation:

$35,000 – $45,000 annually + benefits.  Based on experience.

Responsibilities 

  • Oversee and maintain hospital staff
    • Establish and maintain pool of volunteer vets and vet techs
    • Coordinate and schedule veterinary staff for vet procedure days
    • Works with Sanctuary manager to schedule caretakers into vet assistant shift weekly
    • Supervises and assures that all hospital personnel are properly trained for their position. Including vet assistants, volunteer vet techs and veterinarians
  • Veterinary Records, Policies and Care
  • Ensure prompt and humane care is provided to all animals in a timely manner in accordance with TWS philosophies and standard
    • Work in conjunction with Executive Director regarding policies, procedures, budgets, etc.
    • Ensure that all veterinary medical records are being properly documented and maintained
  • Ensure that all protocols and safety procedures are followed in hospital and when providing medical treatments or care
  • Performs weekly rounds and observations of all animal on site to ensure every animal is doing well and getting what it needs: prompt medical intervention, proper diet, appropriate enrichment and habitat
  • Oversee and coordinate veterinary treatments and procedures
    • Performs or oversees all medical treatments and procedures, under the direction of the veterinarian when staff vet is not on site
    • Schedules annual exams for appropriate animals each year
    • Discuss animal conditions, treatment plans and recommendations with veterinarian to make decisions and provide direction in animal care, pulling in ED when appropriate
    • Performs daily observations on all hospitalized animals or animals being monitored
    • Responsible for communication of medical updates, medication/diet changes and animal status to all staff and ED
  • Hospital Management and Inventory
    • Ensure hospital is clean, organized and maintained always
    • Order and inventory all necessary medications, equipment and necessary supplies for hospital
    • Recording and stocking of controlled substances
    • Responsible for the upkeep, maintenance and recertification of hospital equipment
  • Responsible for compliance with all state and federal regulatory agencies including, but not limited to following DEA, USDA, OSHA, DOT and EPA requirements for waste management
  • Research to keep on top of best practices and professional standards in relation to veterinary medicine
  • Engage other members within the field to discuss issues and potential solutions
  • Participate in special events, marketing, and other promotional activities as assigned
  • Work collaboratively with other staff to meet the sanctuary’s overall revenue goals and objectives
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum four (4) years’ experience in work related to veterinary medicine and animal Veterinary technician preferred
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in supervising, coaching, and appraising staff in a formal supervisor or manager role, preferably in a veterinary hospital or similar
  • Exceptional, bold leadership, communication and strategic thinking skills
  • Broad knowledge of veterinary clinic management, practices, and procedures
  • Thrives and is comfortable with autonomy and accountability
  • Critical thinking and logical reasoning skills, including complex problem solving, troubleshooting, and decision making
  • Familiarity with key messages and communications; demonstrated capacity to effectively communicate and establish rapport with supporters
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with sanctuary leaders, caretakers, co-workers,volunteers and donors
  • Ability to work varied schedules including weekends, evenings, overnights and holidays
  • Ability to lift up to 60 pounds and bend, stoop, crawl and walk on uneven surfaces
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions from 100-degree days to freezing temperature
  • Possession of a valid driver license
  • Must have tetanus vaccine
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to operate vehicles such as trucks, vans, and utility vehicles
