Shrek

History

Shrek is a male bobcat who arrived at the sanctuary in February of 2022. He was six years old at the time.

We were contacted about a bobcat being surrendered by his owner in the Pacific Northwest area. Would we give him a home? The stories usually sound simple. He was privately owned, her husband passed away, she had to move and couldn’t take Shrek with her.

But, Shrek’s story is much more complicated than that. We learned that he’s actually a wild born bobcat. When his bobcat mother died, Shrek and his sibling were taken by this couple, though it was illegal to do so. A notorious breeder falsified paperwork for them, stating these bobcat kittens were captive born and placed the 2nd kitten in another home.

They kept Shrek at their home. This was his home for the past 6 years.

Shrek was declawed, as many bobcats who were former ‘pets’ are.  Sadly, his intake exam showed early signs of arthritis due to this declaw. Now, Shrek will receive the best veterinary care and treatment to ease the pain he might be experiencing.

Life at the Sanctuary

Shrek settled in like he knew this should’ve been his home all along! He came right out of his carrier after the long journey to us. He absolutely loved playing king of the snow mountain, something he’d never had before.

He also loves having his very own indoor heated bungalow. Protection from the elements and the choice to be inside or outside is a very important option we like providing our cats here. And Shrek really appreciates that.

Shrek has a hanging hammock and a lower hammock in his habitat that we often find him curled up in. And he loves, loves, loves his skywalk system where he can spy on the cougar living on one side of him and a tiger across the way.

We keep Shrek busy with lots of enrichment and puzzle feeders to challenge his mind, another thing we think is important for our residents. All in all, it’s a whole new world for Shrek living here at the sanctuary. We couldn’t be happier we were able to provide this for him!

How You Can Help

Rescuing a young bobcat is an expensive commitment since it means many years of care. That’s why our sponsorship program is so important. It helps provide the best life possible for those we’re able to rescue.

If you’d like to become Shrek’s sponsor parent, it’s easy using the buttons at the top of this page. Sponsorship for Shrek is $300 annually or $25 monthly.

Thank you for considering becoming Shrek’s sponsor parent or even giving a one time donation toward his care.  It makes such a difference for him!
